Septic Tank Emptying
The liquid waste enters the tank. Bacteria in the tank then breaks down the solids while the remainder liquid flows out into a soakaway. Solids which can not be broken down must then be removed regularly. The Environmental Agency recommend the emptying of septic tanks annually, but this depends on the amount of waste going into the tank, the type of tank and its size. Regular emptying of the tank greatly reduces the risk of blockages and prevention of clogging up the soakaway. You may not be able to see the damage you are causing if you don’t empty your septic tank but that doesn’t mean that it is not happening. If the tank is not emptied the drain field or soakaway is likely to fill with sludge, which can reduce it’s effectiveness and can lead to a system failure. It can take many years for the effects of the damage to be seen, but the cost of repairs for damage caused usually far way out the cost of regular emptying.
Never put excess Cooking Oils/Fats, Harsh Chemicals, Wipes, Nappies or Sanitary Products down your septic tank as this will cause blockages and damage the bacteria in the tank.
Signs your tank may need emptying or you have a problem:
Appliances such as toilets and washing machines are draining away slowly.
Sewage is backing up to the property.
Pooling of water around the tank and drain field.
If there is smelling of odours around the tank or drains.
